Working with clients and datasets in Control Centre

You can use Control Centre to administer all partnership clients from a central location. All administrative and general information for a client can be entered and edited using Control Centre. Of course, you cannot enter tax figures for the client's Tax Return into Control Centre. This must be done in Partnership Tax.

Clients

Creating in Control Centre

You can also create your partnership clients in Control Centre. If you create a partnership client in this way, you will be given the option to set up a client for Partnership Tax or to only have the client available in Control Centre. You can only access a client in Partnership Tax and therefore complete a Tax Return for them if they are set up for the system. You can always set the client up for Partnership Tax later with the Main Details window.

In Sage Taxation all clients are assigned one of six client types. Clients who are liable for partnership tax should be of the type partnership. If you create a client in Partnership Tax, it will automatically be a partnership client.

Clients whom you want to add as partners in the partnership can be created and administered in Control Centre. If you do not want to use Sage Taxation to produce a Tax Return for a partner, you do not need to set them up for any other system.

The only way to permanently delete a client from Sage Taxation is to use Control Centre. If you delete a partnership client from Partnership Tax, all tax data will be lost, but the client, their Main Details and any data in the categories described above will still be available in Control Centre. From there you can set them up for Partnership Tax again later if you need to.

Datasets

A dataset is a collection of clients. Datasets are administered using Control Centre. You can only create, rename and delete datasets from there. You can work with one dataset at a time. All clients of any type in that dataset will be available for you to view, edit or delete.

All Sage Taxation clients must belong to a dataset. Therefore, the first task that you need to perform before starting to use Partnership Tax is to create a dataset in Control Centre. You can create further datasets if you want and divide your clients between them. However, you should remember that you can only work on a single dataset at once in Control Centre and therefore can only report on or send letters to clients in a single dataset at once.
