Filing by Internet Workflow

Before you begin

  • Your practice must be registered for HMRC Online Services.
  • Enter your online filing credentials via the Tools Online Filing menu.
  • Enter your practice's email address via File > Dataset Properties in Control Centre or File > Practice Details in Personal Tax.

Filing By Internet Workflow

  1. Ensure that a valid UTR is entered for the client, and at least one line of the client's address must be completed.
  2. The tax return should be prepared in the normal way within Personal Tax, Partnership Tax or Trust Tax and validated for submission.
  3. Note: If a Partnership Tax Return is prepared in Sage Business Tax and posted to Sage Partnership Tax, the figures will need to be copied before they can be submitted.

  4. Begin the submission process:
  • In Personal Tax, on the Submissions tab in Current Working Figures select Filing by Internet. Click Next to continue. The Warnings tab may be displayed showing items that are incomplete. You may click Continue to ignore these items, or review the items listed if required before continuing with the submission process.
  • In Partnership Tax or Trust Tax, click the Submission button on the toolbar, or select Return > Submission. Correct any validation errors that are reported.
  1. Select (FBI) File by Internet as the submission process and click Next to continue.
  2. Print a copy of the Return for the client to sign. Click Next to continue. You will be prompted to choose how many copied of the return you wish to print. From this dialog you will also be able to change printer settings.
  3. The return is now awaiting authorization from your client. An HM Revenue & Customs Mark will be generated for this return.
  4. Once authorization is received from your client click Next to continue. You will be prompted to enter a date of the authorization.
  5. The return is now ready for submission. To restart the submission process, click Back, otherwise click Next to continue.
  6. You will see a note on screen advising you that the Return is waiting to be uploaded to HM Revenue & Customs.

Submitting the return

Click the FBI button on the toolbar, or open the Tools menu, choose Online Filing (FBI) > File Returns. This will open the Online Filing client selection screen. See the section within this help on Client Selection for Internet Filing for further information.
