Enter a path

What is a dataset?

On this page of the wizard, you must decide where to store the dataset.

Initially, a default path will be determined by the location of your Sage Taxation master data. You specify this during the Sage Taxation installation. We recommend that you store your datasets with the rest of the master data unless you have a good reason for doing otherwise. Therefore, unless you have a peer-to-peer network, you are advised not to change the default path. If you do change the default path then wish to restore it, select the Default path button.

Should you decide to change the path, the information you enter will depend on which if these situations applies to you:

  • you wish to store the data on a local hard drive, where it will not be accessible to other computers
  • you wish to store the data on a network drive where it is accessible by all computers on the network
  • you have a peer-to-peer network and wish to store the dataset on the local hard drive but allow other computers to share that drive and the data. This usually requires the other users to access it via a different drive letter

Except for the drive letter, e.g C:, path names can only contain letter, numbers, backslash ('\'), hyphen ('-') or underline ('_').

You should create a new directory for each new dataset. If you choose to store the dataset in a directory that already exists, you will be warned that data could be overwritten. You may proceed if you wish or return to the Enter Path page and enter a new location.

Local Hard Drive

Select the Local hard drive option from the option box at the top of the page to enable the Local path box. The Network path box will be disabled. If the default path is on a network drive and you decide to change the location to a local hard drive, the default local path will be the same as the default network path, but the drive letter will be changed to that of your local hard drive. You can change the path by editing it directly in the box or you can select the Browse button to open the Select Directory window. Use this window to select a folder from your hard drive.

You cannot enter a path with the drive letter of a network drive in this box. If you do so, you will be informed that you have not specified a local hard drive. You must correct the problem before you can proceed to the next page of the wizard.

Network Drive

The procedure for specifying a network path is the same as for a local path except the drive letter must be that of a network drive. You must select the Network drive option to enable the Network path box. If the default was a local path and you decide to change to a network path, no default network path will be entered, since you may have more than one network drive. You must enter the new network path into the box or select the Browse button to browse the folders on your network drive(s) using the Select Director window.

Peer-to-Peer Network Drive

If you are using a peer-to-peer network, you should create the dataset on the machine on whose local hard drive the dataset will be stored.

Select the Local hard drive option. If you do not wish to use the default, enter a new local path or select the Browse button to choose a directory from your hard drive using the Select Directory window. Tick the tick box below the Local path box to indicate that you are using a peer-to-peer network.

The Network path box will be enabled and renamed Peer-to-peer network path. Enter the path by which other users will access the local hard drive of this machine. This should point to the same directory as that given in the Local path box. In most circumstances these will both be the same but may be different, if for example, the workstations do not share the whole of the server's hard drive but only the data directory itself. If you are unsure, consult your network engineer.

You will be unable to select the Browse button once you have ticked the Peer-to-peer network tick box since you will not be able to browse for the correct peer-to-peer network directory from the machine on whose local hard drive the dataset is stored. You will not be able to select the Default path button as the drive letter for the Peer-to-peer network path cannot be determined by the Add New Dataset wizard, therefore no default is provided.

Select the Next> button to proceed to the next page.
